If you are in Niagara Falls Ontario during the month of May, you will find a terrific group portrait exhibit at the Rosberg Gallery of the Victoria Branch of the Niagara Public Library. I am excited to be exhibiting with Emily Andrews, Karen Edwards, Marion Forget, Jason Gardiner and Tabitha Stephens. It is located on Victoria Ave, Niagara Falls just two blocks from Queen St, the Niagara Falls downtown district.

I am pleased to announce that I am now exhibiting and selling my paintings at Studio 176 Art, located at 176 N Christina in Sarnia Ontario (right down the street from the Alix). They have a selection of my paintings ranging in size from 24" x 30" to 4"x6" and priced from $400 - $55. There are many small, framed oil paintings and oil sketches suitable to make you think, and, actually, improve your life!! The small paintings are all framed and priced from $55 - $60, perfect for that special person - or yourself! They can fill that small wallspace or make a bookcase more interesting. Placed on your desk at work they give your eyes a rest. There are landscapes, florals, abstracts and, as always, lots of color to lift your spirit.

Studio 176 Art is a bright spot, selling the works of local painters, photographers, textile artists, jewelers and potters. It is worth the drive to Sarnia and worth the detour if you are heading for the bridge to the US.

I'm excited to report that I've been invited to exhibit a one-woman show May 20 - June 30, 2014 at Savoury and Sweet Restaurant in Niagara Falls. Not only is Savoury and Sweet an excellent, independant restaurant, but it is one of the best art and music venues in Niagara Falls. Launch party will be May 20th. About 17 paintings will be exhibited, most for sale as originals. I will also offer some as giclee originals.

I spend November and January to April in Gainesville Florida, home of the University of Florida. I paint at the Allison LeBaron studio on Main St with Allison and a good group who help me keep my nose to the grindstone (palette?). Being in Florida gives me the opportunity to paint more fresh food, while it is still fresh, (such as the pears in the painting Four Sisters in Their Prime) and it changes me in other ways too. Today I picked holly, magnolia leaves and a soft pine branch, all from our yard, added them to a few flowers and created a nice Thanksgiving flower arrangement. Place really does influence my thoughts and my work.

Pickled peppers

Michelle – August 2013

Buy long curved red and yellow hot peppers and one or two short ones.

Paint them first!

Find some gloves or be careful to wash hands very well after handling the peppers. If you have cuts on your hands, your hands will hurt!

When the painting is done, split peppers, remove seeds and veins, flatten. Blister them under the broiler and place in a covered bowl or paper bag for 10 min or so. Then remove as much of the skin as possible and slice the peppers lengthwise in wide strips. Drop the strips in a clean 8oz canning jar.

In a small saucepan bring 6 oz white vinegar, 2 tsp sugar, 1 tsp salt, 2 peeled garlic cloves, 4-5 whole cloves and 2 cardamon seeds to a simmer. Pour over the peppers and apply lid.

Store in the fridge.

Very useful in lots of recipes and also you can use the pickled-pepper-vinegar for dressings and meat marinades.

I do not see my food paintings as 'still life'. I see them as dinner - about the importance of preparing and eating a meal with family and friends, about the swirl of a lively kitchen and the goodness of wholesome ingredients.

I don't think you or I will do anything more important today than cooking or enjoying a meal for your family or friends!. Yes, we all work, but we are all working to put food on the table.

I am painting for the kitchen, the place where food creates family and friends.

Enjoy
